Western Electric 555 compression driver
- This is essentially the "mother of all compression drivers", designed and developed at
Bell Laboratories ca 1927, by E.C Wente, A.L. Thuras and T. Osmer. It comprised an
inverted aluminum dome diaphragm with a self supporting edgewound aluminum ribbon
voice coil and a tangential suspension, a field coil magnetic system with a gap flux of
20,000 gauss (2T), and a radial phase plug. The field coil is energized by 7VDC @ 1.5A.
The moving assembly (voice coil + diaphragm) has a mass of 1.0 gram, and the
diaphragm has an area of 28 square centimeters. The voice coil diameter is 2" (50.8 mm).
The voice coil has a nominal impedance of 16 ohms and a DCR of 12.8 ohms, and the
length of the voice coil ribbon wire is 760 cm. The driver is rated for a maximum input
power of 30W, and an efficiency of about 50% (100Hz-6kHz).
The driver was mainly used on the Western Electric 15A and 15B horns, covering the 60-
6000Hz range in the Vitaphone movie sound systems.

상용주파수 120~3000HZ 정도로 사용되어졌더군요.


15A혼에 대한 고정관념들(빅마우스, 팝과 재즈에 치우친 성향, 주파수의 감쇄등등)은 WE555의 영향
일수도 있겠다는 생각입니다.
현대적 소스에 대응할 수 있는 드라이버들을 사용해 보면서 이런 고정관념들은 편견이었음 알
수 있었습니다. 상당히 높은 주파수를 커버합니다. 수퍼트위터 075의 역무범위 윗부분까지 충분히~
